to Issue $10,000 to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

The Arc of King County is one of three Arc chapters participating in the Foundation for the Challenged grant-making program, which was established in 2006 to provide support dollars to individuals with developmental disabilities for lifestyle necessities.
There are 36,000 individuals with developmental disabilities in the state of Washington living below the government defined poverty level. Thanks to the generosity of Pi Kappa Phi, Push America, Elizabeth Masnari, and The Arc of King County's Board Trustees, we have raised $5,000 for the matching dollar grant program. With the $10,000 raised we can help individuals in our county with basic living necessities not available from other public or private sources.
Basic living necessities, such as the need for a wheelchair ramp for an individual who uses a wheelchair, home modifications, such as a back yard fence which allows a child with autism to play outdoors safely, or to purchase pots and pans and other basic home furnishings, like bedroom sheets and towels, for someone moving out of a institutional facility. Every dollar raised will be matched and given to local individuals with developmental disabilities who are in need of basic lifestyle requirements. The goal of the matching grant program is to reduce the number of people with developmental disabilities that have to live without basic necessities year after year.
Grants will be issued four times a year. The deadlines for the awards are March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31, 2010. The Arc of King County's grant committee will review each application and notify recipients by mail.
